The Ashland Parks and Recreation Department (APRD) is delaying the opening schedule for the Ashland Rotary Centennial Ice Rink due to a permitting issue. The outdoor rink is located in Lithia Park.
Historically, the Ice Rink canopy has been raised every winter and lowered every spring, classifying it as a “temporary structure” under building code. This year, APRD chose to keep the structure up permanently for cost savings and to improve the life of the fabric cover. The structure has remained in place under a temporary permit, which has now expired after reaching the maximum allowable duration under State Building Code. APRD has been working with the canopy manufacturer to apply for the necessary permanent structural permit to allow use of the canopy year-round. Due to recent staffing changes at the manufacturer, the permitting will not be completed in time for the planned opening on Friday, November 21. An updated completion date is not yet available.
APRD is actively working with local structural engineers to finalize the revised engineering certificate and complete all required paperwork so they can submit for a building permit as quickly as possible. The department is prioritizing this effort to keep the project moving forward and to ensure the canopy structure meets all applicable State Building Code requirements for permanent use.
"We want to ensure the residents of Ashland that we are working diligently to resolve this as soon as possible,” stated Parks and Recreation Director Rocky Houston. “We know how beloved the outdoor ice rink is in our community, and we appreciate everyone’s patience as we work through these final steps. Ensuring public safety by ensuring the structure meets current building code is our highest priority. We look forward to welcoming the public soon and kicking off another great season.”
