Prohibited Flammable Plants
As of October 18th, 2018, new plantings of the following flammable plants are restricted within Ashland's city limits, both during new construction and throughout the city within 30 feet of any structure, including structures on adjacent lots. Ashland Municipal Code AMC9.04.022.
Please note that while this list comprises plants that are strictly prohibited because of their inherit flammability, it is important to note that all landscaping plants can be flammable if not properly maintained and watered. Follow best practices for fire-resistant landscaping.
Prohibited Grasses
- Pampas grass (Cortaderia selloana)
- Arborvitae/Redcedar (Thuja sp.)
- Cedar (Cedrus sp.)
- Cedar/Cypress (Chamaecyparis sp.)
- Cypress (Cupressus sp.)
- Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
- Fir (Abies sp.)
- Hemlock (Tsuga sp.)
- Incense Cedar (Calocedrus decurrens or Libocedrus decurrens)
- Juniper (Juniperus sp.)
- Pine (Pinus sp.)
- Giant Sequoia (Sequoiadendron sp.)
- Coast Redwood (Sequoia sp.)
- Spruce (Picea sp.)
- Yew (Taxus sp.)

Exceptions for dwarf or prostrate varieties of these species MUST be approved by Ashland Fire and Rescue before planting. Failure to comply with AMC9.04.022 could result in citation and abatement procedures being initiated.
For exceptions to be considered, the planned placements would need to be located farther than 5 feet from any structure and follow tree and shrub spacing guidelines for flammable plants as defined in the General Fuel Modification Area Standards in Chapter 18.3.10.100.
This list will be reviewed yearly by the Fire Adapted Ashland Committee (previously known as the Wildfire Safety Commission), with changes brought to City Council for adoption in an amended Resolution, as needed.
