Welcome to Smokewise Ashland!

Smokewise Ashland is a local collaborative working group in southwest Oregon dedicated to protecting public health and creating economic resiliency in the face of increasing summer wildfire smoke and the overwhelming need to reduce community wildfire risk through proactive, safely conducted controlled burning.

How Does Smokewise Work?
Smokewise shares web, video, and written literature on how to improve indoor air quality, properly wear a respirator, and avoid smoke exposure. Smokewise provides educational presentations and workshops to citizens, businesses, and institutions regarding best practices for retrofitting buildings and planning for meeting community needs ahead of extended smoke events.

Who is Smokewise Ashland?
Smokewise Ashland is a collaboration formed in 2016 which includes members from Ashland Fire & Rescue, Ashland Chamber of Commerce, Asante Ashland Community Hospital, Jackson County Health and Human Services, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, and City of Ashland Wildfire Safety Commission. Southern Oregon University has embraced Smokewise and opened clean air shelters in the summer of 2018. The collaborative meets quarterly and reports back to the Ashland Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

How is the Community and Smokewise Planning for Smoke?
Partners organizing with Smokewise Ashland, the City of Ashland and Jackson County adopted a Community Response Plan (CRP) for coordination of efforts to address smoke from controlled burning and summer wildfires in January of 2021. The Ashland CRP plan was updated in October 2024 to include a detailed list of actions for 2024 through 2026.
