What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is an outdoor, hands-on, field trip program for classes of 30 students or less. Programs last approximately 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours (depending on the lesson) and include instructors, learning materials, gloves, tools and instruction for safely using tools. Our curriculum is designed for grades 3 and up, with some college level, science curriculum available. Students engage with nature through outdoor science and art curriculum, giving students an immersive learning experience.

Students also "give back" to North Mountain Park through a group service project such as pulling weeds, cutting blackberry, or helping to maintain trails. By engaging in service learning, participants gain a better understanding of their environment while helping to make positive changes through service in their community.

How does it work?

Classes are divided into 2 groups, one group is sent to a hands-on learning station, while the 2nd group participates in a related community service activity. Halfway through the program the groups trade places so both groups experience the full program. We ask that teachers provide at least three adults for supervision in addition to the teacher or group leader (due to the use of tools, younger siblings are not allowed on service learning field trips).

When is it offered?

Field trips are offered on a seasonal basis. Check back to learn when registration opens or get on the Service Learning email list to be the first to know when registration is about to open. Contact the Nature Center to join our email list.

What types of lessons are offered?

Lesson subjects vary, but some examples of trips we offer are:

Bird Nerds (grades 3-12)
Students are taught by our volunteers to use binoculars to observe and identify birds in their natural habitats. Students will learn about bird life, history, and migration.

Water Quality in Bear Creek (grades 4-12)
Students test water quality indicators in Bear or Beach Creek.  Students will learn the importance of indicators such as pH, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, turbidity and nutrients.

What's in the Creek (grades 3-12)
Students will get a hands-on look at the macroinvertebrates living in Bear Creek and learn about the relationship of these creatures and the health of the watershed they live in.

Environmental Art (grades 3-12)
Students will learn about this important artistic movement and explore their individual and collaborative creativity using natural materials.
